3 things I struggle with as a new blogger: Part 3

Consistency

Ahh…this is something that is both easy and difficult to do. Consistency is difficult when you’re in that half-way road to greatness. You so totally need it, but you have so many other things impacting it.

Imagine you took a week or two off work and focussed solely on developing your project, whether that be a blog or portfolio or other such task. I did a test run and managed to pump out two themed week content post schedules over two days. Granted, these were things I could easily research and could diversify in how to execute the delivery. For next time, I may try my hand at an infographic or a pictorial how to for some of the posts, but to start with I was able to develop an entire two weeks’ worth of content across two days and set them for scheduled release.

The advantage of this is that you’re ahead of the game and can give the marketing of your blog a boost if you know you’re coming up to a busy time in your life. The disadvantage is, I realised I needed a whole day to pump out (relatively light) content for a themed week. Imagine if I decide I want to do a topic or theme that requires more work, more research, more image taking?? If I am working a fulltime schedule and also trying to develop a blog, this can be a critical point in the development of my blog if I am not consistent.

This also means that in order to push out that content, I would need to work after work, or on an entire weekend day to keep up.

Manageable yes, but it can be overwhelming.

I found this article over at sheownsit about how to create and keep a consistent blogging schedule. The author Diana Adams is the founder and CEO of Adams Consulting Group and is a featured contributor to sheownsit.

HOW TO: Measure yourself

I had to stop training with my personal trainer in August. The cost of gym fees plus PT was just getting way too high, and by that stage we had purchased our home gym items. I’ve been steadily training 4-5 days a week still but have recently upped my legs day to try and strengthen my leg muscles.

Interestingly, as I was reviewing a post I’d written on plus size leggings on the 14th, I realised I needed new gym tights. I set about looking at size guides at different retailers to see where I fit on the spectrum. Because you know you can go to a plus store like Autograph or City Chic and be a size 16 and you think “gee I’m not really that big” but then go to Target or somewhere else and barely be able to fit into a 20.

So figuring it was about a month anyway since I’d last measured myself I texted my PT to send me my last measurements so I could buy clothing without feeling like a noob. Guess what, I had nooooooo idea how to measure myself.

I did a simple Google search and found something that worked for me. I compared my new measurements to my other ones and there were reductions in line with my training (and eating) schedule since then so I obviously hit the right spot.

Basically, you measure your chest across your boobs (over the nipple), waist in line with your belly button, hips at the widest point, thighs at the widest point (which is easily captured by making two thumb to little finger spaces down from your hip) and arm one thumb to little finger space apart.

This is the article I used to measure myself: How to get your body measurements.

Consequently, have a look at the comparison between a plus size store size guide and a regular store size guide which allegedly goes up to plus sizes also – the difference alone is enough to make a person cringe. No wonder women have such massive complexes about their body image and going shopping when they can’t even go to a store and purchase something off the rack without it not fitting.

Instagram snaps @pixiie83 – Stanthorpe, QLD

These pics were taken a few months back at my friends farm in Stanthorpe, Queensland. One of the nicest country towns I’ve ever been to.

Can’t wait to get my own chunk of land here some day. It truly is wonderful. All images were taken by me using a Samsung Note 4.

Fitness Fitology Friday: Best gym leggings for plus sized women

We are not all skinny mini’s. I wish I were honestly, because I’d rather be training now for physique than weight loss, but we all need to start somewhere. That being said, I have gone through my fair share of gym tights especially in my training journey. Obviously as I lose weight, I need to change my leggings because before long I end up having to pull them up to my ears and hook them over. This has happened often.

If you are in that transition journey like me, you’ll know that good quality gym tights cost a bucket load. $100 a pop minimum for full length tights and that’s a standard.

There are so many companies doing active wear, so many YouTubers who are spruiking their brand via clothing also that it can be difficult finding something that works for you. I’ve tested out a fair few low end and higher end labels and can safely say the gym legging struggle is real, every single day!

There are also a lot of things to consider when buying leggings: how sheer are they (because when doing squats, you don’t want your butt showing to everyone), how strong is the fabric, how high/low do they come up past the hips, how odour/sweat intensive are they, and so on.

Here are my three favourites of high, mid and low range tights available from the interwebs. (***Please note: I have not been sponsored by any company or person and these thoughts and experiences are my own***)

Running Bare $65-$110

Looooooooooooove this brand. Australian made and owned since the early 80’s. Their size range runs from 8-22. They have wonderful, colourful prints and different styles for different activities. I’d like the ability to search and/or filter by activity type though for the tights I am after. I bought a sale pair a couple of months back in just plain black and they’re phenomenal. True to size, high waist band, thick material but not stiff so you can’t move and no movement (as in slippage) when doing squats. They also wash really well.

When they’re on special you can pick them up from $65-$85 unless there’s a 2 for $100 deal. Sometimes you can find them a little cheaper at other online retailers (although I purchased direct from site the first time). Otherwise, at launch they’ll be RRP for $100-110.

Nike & Adidas $40-$80

I prefer Nike to Adidas personally, but I won’t pass up a pair of tights for $50 either, and if one or the other has a good deal, then I’ll likely pick it up. That being said, I’ve slotted these two into mid-range because these days you can find online retailers and even DFO outlets where you can get in season stock at reduced prices. They’re also a much larger company and mass produce these items so will generally do it a fraction cheaper anyway.

Of course, Nike does have a line where the tights are about $150-$220, but I’m not an elite enough sports person yet to need anything of that price.

Other than that, the only thing I don’t like about the Nike tights I last bought was that they were SUPER stretchy, which was great in theory, but because they had a print on them it made my thighs look like large painted logs from Narnia or the Hobbits or something. Maybe I should’ve gone a size down instead, I’m not too sure, but now they’re my bumming around tights instead of ‘wear these publicly’ tights. They also have different activity categories for their tights, activity specific fabric (keep cool, keep warm, no sweat, low odour etc) and a variety of patterns and designs.

Everlast (from Kmart) $20 & Kmart brand performance leggings

These are a good intermediary brand when you are changing tights due to weight loss. They’re good quality for the price point, come in some colourful prints and designs and wash well. It’s a bit hit and miss with the density but for the price point I’m sure you could layer a singlet underneath to cover the butt area if necessary.

Which tights are your personal fave?

Recipe: Overnight oats in a jar

20160923_140507.jpg

Note: apologies for the sad looking image! I had to use my phone because my camera battery was charging!

There is a lot of this around right now. I personally love the idea because I don’t like warm oats, but I don’t mind eating them if they’ve been infused overnight. It’s also an excellent source of fibre and long-burn fuel for the body.

Use any social media program to see how much of this is around. Overnight oats and quinoa is everywhere now and there are so many variations to it. it’s basically a free-for-all in terms of taste and recipes and styles, because you can do so much to it, add your own flavours and mix it with superfoods and proteins to increase your macro’s (if required).

And in terms of flavouring, you really can go crazy. Mix it with peanut butter, almond (or any other nut) milk, honey and maple syrup, dried fruit, fresh fruit, superfoods, protein powders (whey or vegan), flaxseeds (and any other seeds and grain), cocoa, coconut, yoghurt, cow’s milk…etc…. the choice is entirely yours.

I have a mixture I made myself with some dried cranberries, dried raisins, shredded coconut, quinoa flakes, chia seeds and thin slices of almond. I mix this with Chobani Greek yoghurt and fresh berries for an absolutely amazing morning feast. This keeps me tied over until just before lunch and is a good option for heavy workout days. Seeing as I’m going quite heavy with leg days, I am having oats on these days to give me that extra carbohydrate and protein punch.

3 things I struggle with as a new blogger: Part 2

In part 2 of this mini post series, I’d like to look at what else I struggle with as a new blogger. Today’s topic is Finding Inspiration.

Finding Inspiration

Inspiration can be found in many different places and for many different purposes. We are all so interconnected in this age with globalisation, the mass proliferation of communications technology and the reduction of somewhat physical borders in our attempts to be more global people that inspiration can be found in many different settings.

Essentially, inspiration and where to find inspiration requires an element of self-reflection, of taking time to work through creative processes and open up about the answer your inner soul tells you. No one method of finding inspiration is going to be suitable for all. For me for example, I love being outside with my dogs and my camera. I live on a small hobby farm with beautiful native Australian trees and wildlife. I can wander out of the house yard and see a troop of Kangaroos sipping from the dam, of Kookaburras laughing in the tall trees, of possums nesting in the trees inside the house yard. There is complete quiet during the day despite the loud noise of the bush, and it makes you realise that for me, or us what seems to be a very quiet setting is almost an entirely other world inhabited by other life forms and other things, and despite the fact that we all share this same 5 acres, we all carry on our days in different ways.

For some of us, me included, inspiration is now itching away at me. I look at all the marketable and employable skills I have and I have been thinking about other creative ways I can utilise those skills instead of pigeon holing myself to one work field. I am so craving something different…something I can make my own, set my own hours, do my own thing. So for me inspiration is coming in the form of looking at other young women who are entrepreneurs, reading blogs and learning how to market and develop my own inspiration because I sometimes feel that I don’t have much, or much that is entirely my own.

I research widely, read often and watch a lot of instructional videos to understand the methods employed by others to attain success.

How to: Choose good foods in the supermarket and clean out your diet

farmers-market-1213097_1920

Easy. This is so so easy. When I started reading and learning about meal prepping for gym training I was pleasantly surprised by how much effort actually went into food, nutrition and learning about what athletes were putting into their body. I genuinely didn’t think people who were body-building were that food conscious – no, that comes across wrong – I guess I just never really thought about it much. I did have a bit of an assumption that they were all just in it to look at themselves in the mirror, truly, but as I learned more and more, I came to realise that their tenacity and dedication to being truly fit was something I’d never seen before, and food was a huge part of it.

One of the posts I’d read, and I can’t find it now across my favourite bookmarks unfortunately, but one of the posts I’d read was so simple in its explanation…only buy things from the outer aisles. I stopped for a moment and thought about it – so true! Think about it, all the outer aisles are fresh food and items requiring refrigeration – fresh meats, fresh fruit and vegies, fresh dairy, cold cuts, fresh bread and fresh seafood. That’s it. That is all you need. It makes such simple sense to shop that way that if you honestly try it out you’ll soon see how easy it is to clean up your diet.

Anything that has a shelf life, sugar, stabilisers, binders, sulphites, preservatives, artificial colours and other soy, wheat and palm oil derivatives is not going to be good for you. And granted, some items do have this stuff and in some industries like in cold cut meat, (because in Australia, all meat that is cured and/or smoked is required under legislation to have a sulphite or nitrate in it), unfortunately you can’t just get out of it.

When I started eating cleaner, I removed all the rubbish from my cupboards. Anything with a shelf life (in a packet or box), anything with refined sugar, soy, wheat and carbs and anything that had a best before (5 years away) end date on it.

If you have the option to choose organic and its within your price range, of course that is the better option. Being certified organic doesn’t just mean it isn’t just sprayed, it means as so far as the farmer’s soil is considered certified organic and the foodstuffs they feed their cattle is organic is as far as the organic label goes. I personally believe that organic foodstuffs should just be labelled normal food, and that foodstuffs filled with chemicals should have warning labels, but that’s a topic for discussion another time.

If you have the further option to choose Paleo/GAPS made items, then that is another brilliant way to make sure that the food you’re eating is the cleanest. You’ll now find farm to plate butchers and farmers on Facebook like Paleo Beef Direct (Hivesville, Queensland) selling to consumers direct. The advantage is you buy bulk (as in, a half a cow or pig), or you can go halvies (in a cow or pig) with a neighbour or friend. The meat is incredibly sweet and tender as the animals are not factory farmed and there are a variety of cuts available to you. One woman in my suburb was a regular purchaser and also acted as the drop off point so when our meat gets delivered every couple of months, we only need to go to her place to pick it up.

Alternately, find or develop your own local fruit and vegie co-op. My closest one is getting rave reviews. I haven’t purchased from them yet but I will and can do a review when it arrives.

I use Paleo Beef Direct for grass-fed bulk beef and bulk pork purchases. Find them here on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/paleobeefdirect/

Wishlist post: 9 things I will totally need in my life

I don’t want to say it but I will, we are slightly over three months away from the end of year frenzy of Christmas. I can’t say this is my favourite time of year because it isn’t, but I like the sense of finality that Christmas time brings. I’m not a religious person by any stretch but it’s still a nice time to relax and catch up with your family and friends.

I’m at that point that I am starting to need more things. That sounds a little absurd. Okay, well, for example I’m starting to look at full-frame DSLR’s. I have a Nikon D90 which does an amazing job but I’ve had it for almost 8 years and I want something a little more for the enthusiast.

So bearing that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of my current wish list items to share with the interwebs (and hopefully spur my husband into Christmas gift planning!)
